Nine religious leaders who are from the North West and South West regions of Cameroon have welcomed government’s reconstruction plan for the two Anglophone regions.
Meeting in Douala Wednesday August 5th 2020, the religious leaders drawn from the Catholic, protestant, Pentecostal and Islam under the auspices of Christian Cardinal Tumi say “the recovery programme by UNDP will enhance social cohesion and provide basic services to the population of the regions”
In a press release, the leaders in their wisdom say government and united Nations Development Programmes (UNDP) should permanently consult them in the course of implementing the reconstruct plan.
As spiritual fathers of people in the north west and south West regions they by commanding some respect, the Cardinal Tumi’s led meeting calls on the population to cooperate and collaborate in the process of implementation of the reconstruction plan. They go further calling on donor friends to contribute resources for the attainment of the goal of reconstructing the regions devastated by the war of independence since October 2016.
The declaration of the religious leaders has been criticised by some pundits.
To those who think it’s not the right time to rebuild regions under destruction argue that a greater part of the two regions is still under the weight of insecurity as separatist fighters battle against the military on regular bases.
The religious authorities have equally given a blind eye to calls made by both national and international bodies for a declaration of a cease fire before any meaningful reconstruction project is launched.
