Anglophones, victims of soaring violence at Kondengui Central Prison

There has been an increasing wave of violence at the Kondengui Central Prison in Yaounde, one of Cameroon’s most dreaded detention facilities.

With Anglophone inmates continuously being the victims, some say the violence against them is motivated by the fact that they are of the English-speaking minority.

An inmate who identified himself as Adonis Martin says he was assaulted by several other inmates.

“I suffered in the hands of more than six thieves that almost took my life,” he says, adding that, “I took the matter to the prison authorities. I even had internal bleeding but nothing has been done about it, not even to punish those who attacked me”.

“… Where I am now, my life is not safe despite my age,” he wept.

“… The quarter where they put me they said is a punishment. I want to know why all this punishment for more than three years since I was kidnapped from a refugee camp and brought to Cameroon for more than three years no judgment,” he added.

Similar attacks have been carried out on other Anglophone inmates in recent months.
Authorities remain inate to the situation.
