Another Anglophone Detainee Dies In Prison!

54-year-old Nkeku Francis detained in connection to the sociopolitical upheavals in Cameroon’s North West and South West Regions has died.

He breath his last at about 1:30pm Wednesday August 7, 2019 at the Laquintinie Hospital in Douala.

A reliable source told Mimi Mefo Info that Nkeku Francis had been battling with heart, kidney and liver problem for over three months at the prison.

According to an anonymous source, “when the illness started, prison administrators refused to grant him permission to receive good medical attention. So after two months, the situation got worse.
“To make matters more complicated for Pa Nkeku, the hospital was demanding huge sums of money that he could not pay. He called a friend to help but the friend too was sick.”

Arrested last year in the South West Region of Cameroon on accusations of supporting the fight for the restoration of Ambazonia statehood, the man had spent eleven months at the New Bell central prison in Douala.

Detained for close to a year, Nkeku Francis had never been to court for judges to determine if he was guilty or not.
A source has hinted that the death of Nkeku Francis brings the number to five Anglophone detainees that have died at the New Bell central prison in Douala since 2018.

Critics blame poor detention conditions at the level of food, water, spleeping places and lack of medical care for detainees as being responsible for the development of complicated health issues that leads to death.
