Armed conflict in NW, SW:
Close to 11,000 new displacements recorded in Anglophone regions

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, UNOCHA has revealed that close to 11,000 people were displaced in Cameroon’s conflict-hit regions in February.

The findings were made public in its latest report assessing the impact of ongoing fighting between government forces and separatist fighters clamouring to establish a breakaway state called Ambazonia.


In its latest situation report, OCHA Cameroon also released figures indicating which areas were hosting the most Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs.


In the North West region, the divisions most affected included Mezam with 47,600, Bui with 46,500 and Donga Mantung with 40,900 IDPs.


In the South West region, Meme takes the lead, hosting some 67,800 IDPS, followed by Fako which hosts 39,100 IDPs.


Out of the North West region, the West region, according to OCHA, hosts at least 162,700 IDPs, and the Littoral, 80,900.


Still in the conflict regions, OCHA highlighted that 377 Gender Based Violence (GBV) incidents were reported in the two regions.


Healthwise, the COVID-19 pandemic, OCHA stated, is not making things any better, and has been negatively impacting education with an increase of positive cases among teachers and students.


On the bright side, the OCHA report had it that 245,300 people in the North-West and South-West regions benefited from food assistance as well as agriculture and livelihood activities.


In the same light, some 16,383 infants and pregnant women received routine vaccines they had previously missed and 44 children with severe acute malnutrition (SAM) were referred for appropriate treatment.
