As DDR Buea boils, Bamenda counterparts fire missive, threaten similar strike action

Ex-separatist fighters at the Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration Committee, DDR in Bamenda have raised worries over the silence of authorities over their plight.

Among other worries, the ex-fighters who protested their living conditions last month said they also needed formal policies including a specified duration for which they were supposed to be trained and reintegrated into society.

Responding to their worries, the envoy from the Prime Minister’s office had assured the fighters that the government was looking into their case.

Among others, he promised:
“We have come in a delegation made up of the Prime Minister’s office and other four ministries …” he told the ex-fighters, promising among others, “… to get you recruited when you leave this place…”

“This has come from the Prime Minister. I will not say what the Prime Minister has not said, this is just what he said…,” the envoy added.
A month later, the ex-fighters say no concrete action has been taken, and are threatening to protest like their counterparts of the Buea DDR.

“Today the 19 March 2021, the DDR center in Bamenda is writing a message in accordance with what the delegation from Yaounde sent by Prime Minister told us on the 17 February 2021 – one million francs cfa was set up for our documents but up till now nothing has been done …” the ex-fighters noted.

Stating that they have been “…patiently waiting for our reintegration back in to society,” they also questioned what is going on.

“… The tension is very high, but all ex- combatants are asking for serious action about their integration because we have been here for over one year nine months and some for one year and our families are suffering back at home,” they added.
