At national dialogue: CPDM top brass presses for presidential term limit, review of constitution

A member of the Politburo of the Cameroon Peoples Democratic Movement, CPDM party, Sultan Ibrahim Mbombo Njoya Monday made shocking proposals during the national dialogue event in Yaounde.

The ruler of the Bamouns who is also member of the House of senate during an address presented at a plenary requested for a revision of the country’s constitution as well as the electoral code.

He has also asked for the institution of presidential term limit of five year renewable once.

Amongst other things, the CPDM top official asked for a two round presidential election, granting of clemency to some detained persons as well as the released of those incarcerated during the post election crisis in the country.

His remarks have been described by pundits has startling. He has rarely made such outing.
In 2009, it would be recalled parliament had overwhelmingly approved a bill that later removed a two-term presidential limit in the country.

The move had enabled President Paul Biya to run for a third term in 2011.
Fifteen lawmakers opposed to the constitutional change walked out of the National Assembly session and did not cast their votes.
