Attack on the press!
Police officers molest, throw journalist out of Buea stadium

Sports journalist, Macdela Eyong is receiving medical care after being brutalized by the forces of law and order at the Molyko Omnisport stadium in Buea.

She was tortured Tuesday.

Macdela was one of multiple reporters who turned up to cover an Elite One game at the stadium.

Permitted to enter by one of the guards at the entrance, others are said to have attacked her as she made her way in, battering her and pulling her on the ground.

Another sports journalist, Angu Lesly who intervened is said to have been threatened and was nearly brutalized by the armed forces too.

Following the incident, sports journalists in the region under their association, CASJ threatened to boycott FECAFOOT activities.

The federation, they pressed, should guarantee their protection.

The Marketing, Promotion and Media committee of the South West Regional league of FECAFOOT too has been vocal on the issue.

In a statement attributed to the body, it “vehemently condemned acts of deliberate and intentional infliction of pain”.

“Since it was a football game, in her capacity as a member of this legally recognized committee, a badge was not the only visa for her to cover the said football match…” it noted.

The group also demanded a “proper explanation for such primitive acts within 24hrs after which legal actions will be taken”.

The brutalized reporter is also press officer for Tiko United FC.

Reacting to the incident, the team said Miss Macdela Eyong Bessong’s assaulting was appalling.

“… The infamous Stadium Director of the aforementioned playground, took upon himself to manhandle her for allegedly not having her presscard,” the team narrated.

Associating their voices to that of the entire Southwest Sports Press family, they denounced the act and expressed solidarity with the press woman.

“In solidarity with her friends and family we extend our warmest thoughts and best wishes for quick recovery to Miss Macdela who sustained bodily injuries as a result of terrifying incident.”
