Some school-going Persons living with Disabilities in Bamenda have called on individuals, groups and organizations of goodwill to support their efforts in acquiring knowledge.
They made the appeal as the start of the 2021/2022 academic year draws closer. They highlighted the fact that they are in dire need of assistive devices and inclusive school structures.
The Persons Living with Disabilities highlighted the challenges they go through everyday in school.
“Usually, when we are in class and there’s shooting, it is always very difficult to get out or find our way to safety because the school buildings are not Inclusive”, a student with visual impairment said.
The students say there are usually assisted by their friends who walk them around.
“If we don’t have friends to walk with, we will not be able to move around. We have gutters that we can easily fall into”, another one lamented.
Some organisations have stepped in to assist the Persons Living with Disabilities with school materials.
In recent times, the CBC Health Services through the SEEPD program have been engaging and assisting the Persons with Disabilities in the region.
