Bishop Emmanuel Dassi Youfang, auxiliary bishop of Bafoussam in the West Region of Cameroon has been appointed Bishop of Bafia diocese in the centre region of Cameroon.
He was appointed Wednesday May, 13th 2020 by the head of the Catholic Church Pope Francis. The appointment comes to fill a vacancy created since 2017 when Bishop Jean Marie Benoit Bala died. Before the appointment today, Bishop Abraham Kone of Bafang diocese was serving as an apostolic administrator in Bafia.
53 years old Bishop Emmanuel Dassi Youfang replaces Bishop Benoit Bala who died on the 30th of May 2017. His body was pulled out of the Sanaga river.
Archbishop Samuel Kleda, the then President of the National Episcopal Conference in Cameroon stated that Bishop Benoit Bala was killed by some individuals and not drowned as it appeared. Three years after, those accused of killing the Catholic Bishop are still not known.
Critics for three years have been pointing accusing fingers at the regime of President Paul Biya for masterminding the killings.
