The population of Bafmeng in Menchum Division, North West region has requested the creation of a military unit in the area to guarantee the security of persons and property.
According to the population, the military unit is crucial towards halting the influx of arms and ammunition into the country by gun-wielding militia men perpetrating acts of violence on the population.
They made the call to the commander of the 5th Joint Military Region, Brigadier General Nka Valere during a peace-building mission to the area.
Brigadier General Nka Valere’s visit to the Menchum division came as a result of the recent killing of the Fon of Esu village and his wife. They were assassinated on their way home after they had attended the coronation of the new fon of Weh Fon Mbuh II.
A special detachment of the military was dispatched to Esu to quench the rising tensions between the Fulanis and indigenes. The Fulanis are suspected to have carried out the macabre act.
On his part, Brigadier General Nka Valere used the visit to call on the population to live as one people regardless of their differences. He enjoined them to collaborate with the forces of law and order that have been stationed around the area to curb insecurity.
Due to insecurity in the area, the military general and his officials used a military helicopter to arrive the venue.
The Commander of the 5th joint Military Region, Brigadier General Nka Valere was also in Wum to assess the security situation in the area. He also carried out some Civil – military actions in the interest of the population of Menchum Division.
