Bafoussam Landslide victims still to be compensated despite disbursement of FCFA 200million

Weeks after a landslide in Bafoussam in the West region, victims say they are yet to receive the 200 million FCFA promised by President Paul Biya. Shortly after the president made the promise, Territorial Administration minister, Paul Atanga Nji took some relief items to the victims, extending the condolences of the head of state.

More was expected from the 200million package but is yet to come. In a video making rounds on social media, the relatives of one of the victims said they are yet to see a dime and have gone on to begin funeral preparations with their own money.

“I’ve not received any money to prepare for the funeral” Late Tsague Aimee’s elder sister noted. This she explains is despite having travelled to Bafoussam to get the money to no avail.

Another relative of theirs after losing two children in the tragedy too they explained, attempted to commit suicide and is currently receiving medical care.

In all, the family says it lost 17 members in the landslide.
“He (the deceased) used to house me in Bafoussam …. I am now all alone there” another member of the family explained.

The Divisional Officer in charge ,the family claims however prohibited them from asking for remuneration for the 17 persons lost despite all being members of a single family.

Following the recent funeral service organised by the state for the victims marked by a national day of mourning, many fear nothing more will be done for the affected families.

The recent turn of events is not the first time victims have complained about the duration for getting compensation following the demise of their family members or loss of property.

A similar cry was made by victims of the October 21 2016 Eseka train incident that left 76 dead and 600 injured who complained that the compensation process was taking long.
