Bambui-Fundong Road Still Void Of Vehicles After Military Clears Barricades

Despite an operation carried out by the forces of law and order to clear the Bamenda- Bambui road of barracades mounted by non state armed groups, the road is still void of vehicles.

Many users of that stretch of road say, nothing has changed after the operation by the Cameroon military.

Commercial motor bikes have been functioning the way they have been when the roads were blocked.

Some drivers say it will be very dangerous for them to work on the road because of insecurity.

Taking to MMI, one of the drivers said the authorities want to use them to test the ground.
“Yes, what was used to block the roads has been cleared. Now, will the military take us to Fundong and bring us back and also provide security to our homes? This is the problem. The barricades did not stop us from using that road, the guns did,” the driver said, adding “…they should use the road without armored cars let’s see.”

To another, using the stretch of road would be a suicide mission especially as many of the drivers have not yet collected their car keys and documents from the armed men.

“Our keys and car documents are with the Amba fighters. The gendarmes in Tubah are keeping our cars and demanding as much as four hundred thousand francs before they can release them to us,” he revealed.

“The governor,” the driver added, “said we should go back to the roads but he did not tell his boys to release our vehicles back to us. What hypocrisy!”

Another who also refused to be named said the mad rush to open the roads is because those at the check points have no one to extort this time around.

“The police and gendarmes at the numerous security check points are going through hard times. The money they used to collect from us is not forth coming so they too are feeling the pain but think force is the only way out,” he explained.

Just this morning, we got reports yet to be confirmed that a man and his vehicle have been taken in to the bushes. He was alone in his car when he was intercepted around Babanki by armed men, as he plied the highway.
