A notorious drug dealer in Bamenda who identified himself as Bakari Oumarou, has shockingly confessed to collusion between his illicit operation and members of the security forces.

Oumarou’s revelation comes shortly after he and 25 others were apprehended by the police during a targeted operation at Old Town neighborhood on Sunday, April 28, 2024.

The arrest was part of a coordinated effort by the police in a crackdown on drug trafficking in the North West regional headquarters.

Among the items recovered during the operation was a staggering sum of FCFA
1.9 million, believed to be proceeds from drug sales.

However, what has captured national attention is Oumarou’s confession, in which he alleges that security forces have been actively involved in facilitating the illegal drug trade.

According to Oumarou, corrupt officials within the security forces have been aiding drug dealers by providing protection and turning a blind eye to their activities in exchange for bribes.

“I was surprised today because they came but didn’t collect money as they always did, rather they arrested us,” said Oumarou in Pidgin.

“They came this morning when Gendarmes who were taking the drugs with us had left,” he further alleged.

The confession has sent shockwaves through the officers and the public alike, raising serious concerns about the integrity of the security apparatus.

Authorities have pledged to launch a thorough investigation into Oumarou’s allegations and root out corruption within their ranks.

The revelation has reignited debates about the challenges faced in combating organized crime and corruption in the country.

Many are calling for swift and decisive action to address the systemic issues that allow such collusion to thrive.

In total, 53 suspects have been arrested following the crackdown on organized crime in Bamenda.

According to the police, the period of grace for drug dealers is over.

“The holiday period is over for those who sell drugs in Old Town. They either stop or they should park out of Bamenda,” Emmanuel Mbock, the Central Police Commissioner told journalists, emphasizing the dangers of the drugs on the society in general.

The police have made no comment regarding Oumarou’s revelations. This brings to question the rationale behind these arrests at a time the drug lords are still carrying out their businesses.
