Bamenda City Council sits up after media reports on extremely dirty state of the town

Around the Ntarinkon Market’s decaying trash mound, some trucks were seen on Wednesday, August 23rd, 2023. They are obviously there to remove the trash.

Last week, MMI and several other media outlets reported and criticised the Bamenda City Council’s poor trash management plan.

“We find it astounding that people walk by on a daily basis while waiting for Equinox television to remind them of how disgusting and filthy the town is,” Manka, a vendor at the Ntarinkon Market, told MMI.

500 metres away from the garbage heap, one can smell a pungent odour coming from it when the front-end loaders dump it into the waiting trucks.

“We are delighted that the council is finally cleaning up the waste, but the odour they are subjecting us to is so depressing,” remarked Anthony, a bike rider.

“The fact that they are cleaning up the trash is a wonderful thing, but why didn’t they do it overnight? The Bamenda City Council’s waste management strategy will make the town stink all day long,” said a taxi driver as he passed the Ntarinkon rubbish dump, which was starting to decay.

Following last week’s local media coverage of the plight of citizens as garbage surrounds the city of Bamenda, the City Council ordered the garbage to be removed.
