Bamenda: Cameroon Baptist Convention Health (CBC) empowers braille, sign language teachers

The Cameroon Baptist Convention Health Services (CBCHS) held a month-long training for Braille and sign language teachers, which increased their confidence and ability to instruct their students.

It took place on Friday, August 18, 2023, at the Baptist Centre in Nkwen, Bamenda, the chief town of the North West Region of Cameroon.

Ten braille instructors and ten sign language teachers from Cameroon’s North and South West regions came together for the event.

The Cameroon Baptist Health Services Director, Prof. Tih Puis, thanked the teachers for attending the training during the closing ceremony, which was presided over by the North West Regional Delegate for Secondary Education, Ngawng Roland Yuven.

Prof. Tih underlined the significance of organising this program given the present shortage of resource teachers needed to accommodate the increasing number of students in both Regions.

He said that the training was aimed at “improving the quality of braille and sign language services” in addition to increasing the number of braille and sign language teachers.

The Regional Delegate for Secondary Education encouraged the teachers to “champion the course of inclusion in your respective schools.”

The training was conducted with the assistance of the Christian Blind Mission and was done so within the scope of the Comprehensive Programme for the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities and Inclusive Access to Basic Services of Health and Education in the North West Region.
