The European Union Ambassador, HE Jean- Marc Chataigner, emphasized the importance of youth participation in the electoral process during a visit to Bamenda on Friday, April 26.

Addressing a gathering of over 200 young individuals as part of the EU-sponsored Youth Sounding Board project, the diplomat urged them to register on the voters’ list and actively seek to be voted too.

The Ambassador commended the initiative of the Youth Sounding Board in fostering discussions on opportunities for young people within the EU.

Emphasizing the significance of political engagement, the Ambassador encouraged the youth to take ownership of their future by participating in the democratic process.

“Please register and vote, it’s very important for your future,” Ambassador Jean -Marc told the youths.

However, the Ambassador’s call comes amidst heightened security concerns in the Bamenda and the North West Region, with separatist threats against any form of elections.

Many young people expressed apprehension about registering openly due to fears for their safety.

Despite these challenges, they remain cognizant of their civic responsibilities and the importance of having a voice in shaping their communities and nation.

“Today I have registered, I hope to be able to cast my vote,” said one of the Youths.

“I want to have a say in who governs, that is possible with my electoral card,” said Wirsih, a participating youth.

“The threats are too much, I wish after registering, one can actually be able to vote when the time comes,” she added.

The Ambassador’s message resonated with many attendees, who see their participation in the electoral process as a crucial step towards effecting positive change in their communities.
Despite the risks, they are determined to exercise their right to vote and make their voices heard.

“During the registration process, I had to make sure no one was taking pictures it’s scary,” said a youth.

Calls for Cameroonian, especially youths, to participate in elections have been resounding, as the country prepares for elections next year.
