An investigation carried out by MMI has confirmed that Ambazonia separatist fighters were responsible for the killing of Anye Nde Nsoh. The 27-year-old, Nde Nsoh, was the West and Northwest region bureau chief for the weekly Advocate Newspaper was shot dead in Bamenda, the Capital of the North West region, last night.
The journalist and sports reporter was killed at the Don Simon bar on Che Street, in the Ntarikon neighbourhood.
He died of bullet wounds while being rushed to a nearby hospital
No separatist group has claimed responsibility.
The reason for his killing is yet to be known.
It is unclear so far from our investigations whether he was targeted by the separatists or simply a victim of circumstances, found at the wrong place.
Many have confirmed that Don Simon Bar has been a hot spot for military and separatist confrontations that often resulted in casualties.
“This is where soldiers and amba are often confronting each other, but last night, the military was not there. The amba are the ones who came around and before we knew it, we heard gunshots and Anye fell to the ground in a pool of his own blood,” recounted an eyewitness.
Many colleagues in shock
Many of the colleagues of Nde Nsoh are expressing shock over the macabre act.
Tarhyang Enowbikah Tabe, the publisher of The Advocate Newspaper, confirmed that the slain journalist had been at work that evening and it was a couple of hours after he left when they head news of his death:
“He left the online editorial meeting at 6 pm only for us to read of his death at about 8 pm. It is so sad. The boy was so humble and always wanted to be a great Journalist,” Mr. Tabe told MMI.
“This is unbelievable. We spoke yesterday morning and I did not know it was our last discussion. I am short of words,” a Bamenda-based journalist said.
Nde Nsoh was a sports journalist who also worked with Dream FM and also provided reports for The Observer news site.
His death comes four days after the celebration of world press freedom day when journalists in Cameroon raised concerns over their safety especially those practicing in the crisis-hit North West and South West regions of the country.
This is the second journalist to be killed in the context of the ongoing anglophone Crisis, and the fourth journalist to be killed in Cameroon over the last few years.
