Bamenda Main Market is undergoing reconstruction, which is hoped to transform it into an ultramodern complex, signalling a hopeful future for the city. The reconstruction of the historic Bamenda Main Market has commenced today, signifying a significant milestone for the city’s bustling economic centre. The project, given to construction firm Edge, comes after a destructive fire in February that destroyed more than 300 shops.

The 6 Billion Central African Francs (CFA) contract highlights Mayor Achobong Tambeng Paul’s dedication to providing a modern market. Funding was obtained through a loan from the FEICOM communal development pool, which was approved by the members of Bamenda City Council.

“This is more than just reconstruction,” declared Mayor Achobong. “We’re envisioning a two-story complex with improved accessibility from all sides, a dedicated water borehole, and a modern electrical system.”

Previous statements suggested a total demolition of the current structure, making room for a more contemporary marketplace. This ambitious plan also includes provisions for financial and insurance institutions.

The February fire underscored the pressing need for improvement, as it was exacerbated by the interconnected aluminium roofing and cramped market layout. The new market has been designed with a strong emphasis on safety and functionality, addressing these concerns head-on.

“The council’s decision to demolish and rebuild is a bold one,” stated Mezam Senior Divisional Officer Simon Emile Mooh. Mooh is also in charge of the commission responsible for providing compensation to traders affected by the fire.

This project coincides with another exciting development: the construction of a new proximity stadium at the BamendaParcours Vita. This initiative, with a budget of less than 1 Billion Central African Francs (CFA), is focused on meeting the increasing need for contemporary recreational facilities in the city.

Amidst the ongoing market reconstruction and upcoming stadium construction, Bamenda is on the brink of a remarkable transformation. The city council’s prompt response brings a glimmer of hope for both traders and residents.
