Bamenda: Taxi Drivers Union say non-possession of identification badges promote insecurity

The President of the Mezam Taxi Drivers Union, Gerald Tamanjong has disclosed that less than 700 drivers in Bamenda own identification badges which are considered one of the most important documents for them.

He has invited taxi drivers in the division to update their registration formalities stating that it is a key security measure between drivers and passengers.

Gerald Tamanjong noted that their sector is better placed to reduce insecurity.

“If arms or suspected individuals are coming to town, they must pass through taxis. So if we the taxi drivers have all our badges, follow up on how we are carrying our passengers. If a passenger is putting something in our car, we have to make sure that we control the things. From there at least, the insecurity will reduce,” Gerald Tamanjong said.

Recently, Improvised Explosive Devices, IEDs, have been planted in taxis in Buea and Bamenda causing the death of many people.

With the high rate of insecurity brought about by the crisis rocking the two English-speaking regions of the country, Gerald Tamanjong believes it’s time to restore order in the sector.

“Drivers who have refused to get their identification papers are just being selfish. We need order in this sector,” he concluded.
