In what was one of several incidents recorded in Cameroon over the last few days, the Mile 4 Park Market in Nkwen, Bamenda, North West Region went up in flames last night.
While the exact cause remains unclear, some traders in the market speculate it could have been ignited by separatists.
A trader at the Mile 4 Park Market tells MMI that they “have been warned several times against selling on ghost town days”.
“Letters had been given to those who opened on ghost days but they never respected and took them for granted,” adds our source.
Among those believed to have incurred the most losses, are those who sell corn beer, a drink known to be heavily consumed by many on ghost town days.
The town’s authorities and separatists alike have however remained mute over the market fire incident.
