Sultan Nabil Mbombo Njoya of the Bamouns has called for peace and social cohesion after his kinsmen violently attacked the Tikars ethnic group in Magba, West Region on Thursday.

Reports say about five people died during the attack by the Bamouns; several shops reportedly belonging to the Tikars were also burnt.

“Following the unfortunate incidents that occurred on the afternoon of Thursday, August 8, 2024, Sultan Mouhammad-Nabil Mforifoum Mbombo Njoya, King of the Bamoun, urges the sons and daughters of Noun to put before all feelings, peace so dear to the Department of Noun in particular and Cameroon in general on the one hand and trust in Almighty God, the Supreme Judge, on the other hand,” the revered traditional ruler said in a release.

Without condemning the violence, Sultan Nabile Njoya offered words of “deep compassion and solidarity” to people injured during the fighting.

Although the clashes subsided on Friday, the impact could be felt in Magba, whose residents are predominantly from the Tikar ethnic group.

Thursday’s clashes were a resurgence of a previous beef between the Bamouns and the Tikars, which started in February.

Cllashes erupted between both ethnic groups on February 3 after the Bamouns publicly undressed the Tikar King for referring to their Sultan as “my son” during an event in Foumban.

It took the intervention of the West regional Governor, Awa Fonka Augustine, for peace to reign between both ethnic groups.
