Barrister Nkongho Felix turns down SDF appointment, says defending human rights remains his priority

Cameroon’s Human Rights lawyer, Barrister Nkongho Felix Agbor Balla has turned down an appointment by the Social Democratic Front, SDF.

Barrister Balla did so in a letter this June 26, 2022 addressed to the party Chairman Ni John Fru Ndi.

“I however regret to inform you that I am unable to accept this appointment,” he stated after thanking Fru Ndi for the appointment.

The founder of the Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Africa (CHRDA), went on to praise Fru Ndi and the role of SDF in making Cameroon’s democracy what it is today.

He, however believes “the new challenges our people face require new solutions and new approaches.”

“For six years now, my people, your people, our people are suffering grave violations of their human rights each day in a brutal conflict which partisan politics failed to avert and has this far proven unable and unwilling to resolve,” Balla added.

Despite the appointment, his current priority, the renowned human rights lawyer said, “… is to promote and defend the human rights of these millions of victims who otherwise are being brushed aside by current politics in Cameroon”.

In addition to rejecting Fru Ndi’s appointment, Barrister Nkongho Felix said the country needs concerted effort beyond party lines.

The award-winning legal mind was appointed Barrister Balla was on June 16th named president of SDF’s Judiciary Affairs unit.

His resignation comes at a time the SDF party is in turmoil as some party bigwigs expressed dismay at the latest appointments.

Some have threatened other moves if the longstanding Chairman failed to ‘correct’ the latest appointment decision.
