Nursery and primary education has been a forgotten point in Obang village in Bafut sub division Mezam division in the North West region of Cameroon since 2017 when the armed struggle for the Independence of Southern Cameroon started.
Some pupils of school age have fled to safer places as shooting persist while others still living in the village loiter around with nothing to do. Armed separatists calling themselves as Ambazonia fighters have sent away all government school teachers upholding school boycott in the community as the surest means to attract international sympathy for the attainment of Independence.
To ensure a better future for children in the community, Fon Nanoh II says they will start a Community primary school in Obang village come September 2021. “The village will pay teachers to at least teach pupils for the good of the Community tomorrow. We are begging the military and Ambazonia boys to respect the rights of these kids to be educated” the traditional ruler stated as he supervised a general cleaning of the school campus ahead of the start of the school year.
“Many people in this village don’t have money to send their kids to towns and cities in Cameroon for them to attend school. So we are begging and wish that the Community secondary school should start this September. Our children should not grow up to be illiterates”. A parent stated.
Inhabitants of Obang village confesses their intention to see and experience peace in their Community while calling on the warring parties to give peace a chance.
Separatists have often proclaim contrasting views on school resumption in the North West and South West regions of Cameroon. This have cased many children to stay out of school since the armed struggle started.
