Benin: Two Cameroonians slammed 10- year jail terms

Two Cameroonians have been handed 10-year jail terms in Benin.

The two compatriots, a driver and a security guard are said to have been sentenced in connection to a theft action they carried out in Cameroon before seeking refuge in the West African country.

They went to Benin after stealing over 20 million FCFA during an operation of conveying funds, sources say.

They were arrested and sanctioned by the justice system in Benin, we gathered.

The local press in Benin published reports yesterday 15th July, 2020 that the first class court of Cotonou ruling in criminal matters on July 14th, 2020 sentenced them to 10 years in prison.

The court declared they were accused and found guilty of theft for the sum of 20 million FCFA during a fund transfer operation while they were in Cameroon.

A local radio in the capital of Benin, Chillis Radio indicated that “they likely bribed a gendarme officer at the time of the crime”.

After successfully settling in Benin where they expected to spend the money in utmost serenity, they ran out of luck and were apprehended by the justice system of the country following denunciations by one of their Beninese business partners who realised they were fugitives.

It however remains unclear whether they will be extradited to spend their jail in Cameroon.
