On Thursday, October 3, 2024, a truck struck and killed a commercial bike rider in a tragic accident at the Hospital Roundabout in Bamenda, North West.

Adamu, a loader who embraced commercial motorcycling as a side hustle, died at about 6:30 am when his bike collided with an oncoming truck.

Eyewitnesses report that the truck, approaching from the opposite direction, had suffered a brake failure.

“It is a sad situation to witness,” one onlooker remarked, describing the heartbreaking moment as the truck veered off its course and crushed Adamu.

Eyewitnesses say the casualties could have been more if there were many people on the road at the time of the accident.

An eyewitness said, “Fortunately, the roundabout remained scanty; otherwise, many others would have faced crushing injuries.”

After Adamu’s death, fellow bike riders expressed concerns about road safety.

Many argue that the roads in Bamenda do not allow large trucks and other vehicles to navigate safely due to their narrowness.

“These roads are too narrow,” one rider complained, while others suggested restricting trucks to busy areas only at night to reduce the risk of accidents.

A group of riders calls for stricter enforcement of vehicle safety checks.

“They suggested that forces stationed on the roads should check the state of vehicles,” emphasising the need for authorities to ensure trucks and other large vehicles are roadworthy before allowing them to pass through heavily populated areas.
