Bishop Philippe Alain Mbarga Injured in Road Accident

Bishop Philippe Alain Mbarga, Bishop of Ebolowa, was seriously injured in a road accident on Saturday, June 29, 2024. The accident occurred between the bishop’s residence and the cathedral where he was going for ordinations.

According to a press release from the Gendarmerie Brigade Ter, the bishop’s car lost control and hit an embankment. The bishop and two other passengers, a nun, Sister Monique Sophie Beyala, and the driver, Mr. Belinga were all seriously injured and were taken to the Ngalane Reference Hospital for treatment.

“All three occupants, including the Bishop, are in intensive care but out of immediate danger,” confirmed the Gendarmerie in their statement.

The preliminary cause of the accident is a mechanical failure in the brakes. An investigation is underway.

In a statement released by the Diocese of Ebolowa, Vicar General Bertrand Melobo said that the bishop, the nun, and the driver were all out of danger. He thanked the many people who have been praying for the victims and asked the people of God to continue to pray for their full recovery.

“The Bishop thanks everyone for their prayers and compassion.” He urged the faithful to “continue praying for the victims’ full recovery.”

Bishop Mbarga is well-known and respected in Cameroon. He has been a vocal advocate for peace and justice in the country. He is also a member of the Consecrated Life Commission of the Episcopal Conference of Africa and Madagascar.
