Biya Appoints New Army Personnel Hours After Return From Geneva

President Paul Biya has made slight changes in the administration of Cameroon’s Ministry of Defence, less than 24 hours after the 91-year-old returned from a lengthy stay abroad.

Services pomped with new blood include the central administration, and services attached to the air force and the navy.

The President returned to the country on the evening of Monday, October 21, after spending 49 days abroad during which rumours filled the media space about his ailing health and possible death.

In a decree read on state media on Tuesday, October 22, Biya appoints Brigadier General Ndjonkep Metomhy Frédéric as the new Inspector General of the Armed Forces.

Colonel Bakwo Son Briand becomes Head of Division in charge of Relations with the Outside World.

The presidential decree also appoints Colonel Njonkou Njanjo Pierre Technical Inspector in the Office of the Army Chief of Staff.

Meanwhile, Battalion Commander Biongla II Jacob has been transfered to the services attached to the Major General of the Army as sub officer incharge of transmissions, electronics and information .

The air force has also seen new appointments.

Lieutenant-Colonel Kemajou Zefack Rostand has been raised to the position of sub officer in charge of training and schools, while Commander Mpinwa Moababande Gabrielle is now the sub officer in charge of materials in the office of deputy director incharge of logistics.

In the Navy, Captain Tabet Jabet Adrien Aymard becomes head of infrastructure in the office of deputy manager of incharge human resources.

Captain Epee Guy Robert head has been appointed officer in charge of plans.

Captain Kameni Justine, on the other hand, moves to the office incharge of supplies.

Biya lastly reshuffled the army command in August 2023, after neighbouring Gabon witnessed a coup that ousted dictator Ali Bongo from power.

The Gabon incident fueled coup sentiments across the Central Africa sub-region, especially in Cameroon where Paul Biya has been president for 41 years now.
