Biya congratulates new UK Prime Minister, promises fruitful cooperation

The President of the Republic Cameroon, Paul Biya, has congratulated Sir Keir Starmer, the new UK Prime Minister, whose party, Labour, on Thursday overwhelmingly won the general elections with 412 seats in Parliament.

Cameroon’s President, in a telegram message on Friday, July 5, said his country has had wonderful cooperation ties with the UK and wishes to continue under Sir Keir’s administration.

“I seize this pleasant circumstance to assure you of my availability and that of my government, to work for the continuous promotion of the excellent and multiform relations of friendship and cooperation that our states and our people have brought for several decades,” he said.

Aside from cooperation ties, the UK and Cameroon share a historical relationship, considering that the UK is one of Cameroon’s colonial masters.

Britain administered the two English-speaking Regions the country before independence in 1961.

Sir Keir’s ascension to power ushers in a new leadership in the UK, which might want to strengthen the country’s relations with Africa.

Keir, 69, is the 58th PM of the UK. His party defeated the consecutive, which was led by Richi Sunak of Indian descent.

The UK has been ruled by 10 Prime Ministers since 1982, when Paul Biya became President of Cameroon.
