President Paul Biya has declared an official funeral for the late David Abouem a Tchoyi, former Governor of the North West and later South West Region.

The official funeral shall take place on Saturday, February 8, 2025, at Kiki, in his native Mbam et Inoubou Division of the Centre Region.

By official funeral, it entails the Head of State will send a representative to the funeral who will adorn the deceased with a national medal.

It equally means that the government is taking charge of the funeral cost.

David Abouem a Tchoyi died on January 15 in Yaounde.

He died while serving as a member of the National Commission on the Promotion of Bilingualism and Multiculturalism.

Career

David Abouem a Tchoyi served the government in several capacities after graduating from the National School of Administration and Magistracy (ENAM).

David Abouem a Tchoyi became Governor of the North West Region before later serving in the same capacity in the South West Region.

He was a one-time Minister of Higher Education. He had an impressive career serving both former President Ahmadou Ahidjo and incumbent President Paul Biya.

David Abouem was once appointed to the prestigious position of Secretary General at the Presidency of the Republic.

Legacy of David Abouem a Tchoyi

As David Abouem begins his journey to eternity, many will remember him as the one Francophone elite in Cameroon who understood the problem of the Anglophone minority.

He never sat quietly when the Anglophone Crisis started in 2016. He spoke truth to power, and tried to persuade the government to seek a proper solution to the grievances of English-speaking Cameroonians.

However, the government snubbed his advice and that of other observer and the crisis eventually escalated into an armed conflict the following year.

If the government had listened to David Abouem a Tchoyi, it would have spared the thousands of lives lost since 2016.

Though gone, David Abouem a Tchoyi’s memory remains fresh for his contributions to resolving the Anglophone Crisis.
