Silent Biya Sends Mattresses and Food to Gidado Massacre Victims

By Njoh Linda

At a time when many hope for the survivors of the Gidado massacre to begin rebuilding their homes and lives, President Paul Biya has sent mattresses and food aid to affected families.

The assistance, sent through the Ministry of Territorial Administration’s emergency humanitarian services, includes bedding materials, assorted foodstuffs, essential household items, and cash envelopes.

The distribution took place on Wednesday, January 21, 2025, in Ndu, Donga-Mantung Division, under the supervision of the Senior Divisional Officer, George Magloire Bassilekin.

During the handover, Mr Bassilekin conveyed the condolences of the presidential couple to the families of the victims.

The Gidado attack on January 14 left 14 people dead, 10 others injured, and caused significant property damage.

Despite this intervention, critics argue that President Biya’s silence over the massacre has overshadowed the gesture.

Many expected at least a public statement or message of condolence to the grieving families. Since the attack, the presidency has remained notably quiet, raising questions about its engagement in the aftermath of the tragedy.

As survivors begin to receive aid, the bigger challenge remains: reconstructing lives disrupted not only by violence but also by the ongoing tensions in the region.
