Several lawyers are receiving medical attention in different hospitals in Douala Tuesday, November 10, 2020.
They sustained injuries at the Bonanjo Court of First Instance when military men threw tear gas into the courtroom to disperse the lawyers.
According to Barrister Tamfu Richard, speaking to Mimi Mefo Info, “The court officials called on military men to come and brutalise us for demanding for the release of two of our colleagues.
“The human rights lawyer and member of the bar in Cameroon adds that “…two of our colleagues; Barristers Ndjoukouo Annie Christelle and Wantou Augustine were remanded in custody at New Bell Central Prison yesterday Monday November 9 and their hearing was to take place today November 10. The Cameroon Bar Association applied for bail for the colleagues but it was denied, for a case that bail can be granted.”
As lawyers stood against the decision of the court, the court opted for force.
A source has hinted Mimi Mefo Info that a lawyer was shot at on the leg with a bullet by a military man.
The two lawyers in question are still detained at New Bell Central Prison. While other lawyers in Douala say they won’t rest until their colleagues are set free.
The Cameroon Bar Association, at the moment of this report, had not reacted to what many have described as unjust brutality on lawyers at the Bonanjo Court of First Instance in Douala.
