Security forces have launched a house-to-house search operation in Mile 16. This follows a brutal confrontation this morning between armed individuals and security personnel. The incident has led to multiple casualties, destruction of property, and widespread fear among residents.

The violence erupted early this morning when heavily armed gunmen stormed Mile 16, blocking the major roads linking Buea-Kumba and Buea-Mutengene. The attack occurred just 100 metres from the Mile 16 security control post, underscoring the audacity of the assailants and the vulnerability of the area.

Casualties and Damage

According to on-the-ground reports, the confrontation resulted in the following casualties:

  • A soldier from the Rapid Intervention Battalion (BIR) was killed in Muea.
  • A police officer was shot in Mile 16.
  • Four gunmen were killed in the ensuing gunfight.
  • Four vehicles were set ablaze.
  • Several sheds at the Mile 16 market were reduced to ashes.

The violence has forced authorities to step up security measures in affected areas.

City on Lockdown

In response to the attack, security forces have imposed a lockdown in Molyko, where they are actively patrolling to restore order. The heightened security presence has also affected business activities, as the Buea main market, which was scheduled to operate today, remains deserted. Residents in Muea and Mile 16 are reportedly fleeing the area, fearing further violence.

Relative Calm Returns

Despite the tense atmosphere, relative calm has been restored in Buea. However, the situation remains fragile, with security personnel maintaining a strong presence to deter any further attacks. Authorities continue to urge residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement as investigations and security operations continue.

As the situation develops, questions however remain about the ability of security forces to prevent such attacks and ensure long-term stability in the region. The recent violence serves as yet another grim reminder of the ongoing insecurity affecting parts of Cameroon.
