‘Broke’ Cameroon withdraws from hosting 2020 military world cup

Cameroon has made known its intentions not to host the 2020 military world cup any longer.

In a letter to the International Military Sports Council ,CISM, the minister delegate at the presidency in charge of defence, Joseph Beti Assomo explains that the recent decision is as a result of the financial constraints Cameroon is set to face organising CHAN and AFCON in 2020 and 2021 respectively.

Regretting the action, Beti Assomo adds that Cameroon however “remains attached to the ideals of peace and solidarity held by the CISM”.

Cameroon was set to host the 2021 military world cup from 20 June to 07 July, 2020 in Yaounde.

Ahead of the two sporting competitions this year and next year, billions have already been spent on infrastructure and other vital aspects Tue give the tournaments a befitting organization.

The Japoma Stadium in Douala alone media reports say cost around 143 million US Dollars or more. While some say these expenditures are necessary for the infrastructure and a great competition, others hold that more focus would have been put on the ongoing Anglophone crisis that has turned deadly and the economic challenges it has caused.
