Buea: Family of security guard stabbed by armed robber solicits financial help amid employer’s neglect

The family of a security guard in Buea, who was stabbed on May 10, 2023, by an armed robber, has solicited financial help from the public to save his life.

24-year-old Essien Snach was badly injured in the stomach as he attempted to stop a robber from breaking into Express Exchange, a financial institution in Molyko-Buea, which he was guarding.

Although his condition is still critical, the family got him discharged from the Buea Regional Hospital, where he was hospitalized, to the house because they have no money to pay hospital bills and buy medications.

“My older sister’s son, who works as a security officer at a bank in Buea, caught a thief who was attempting to break into the bank. So the thief pierced him in the stomach and all his intestines came out. So he was rushed to the Buea Regional Hospital where Dr Mokake, the hospital Director, did the surgery. But the situation is not still the best because of the financial issue,” a family member told MMI.

She solicited: “What we are begging for is help, because it’s not really easy – the medication, everything is not really easy for us.”

Abandoned by employers

Essien Snach’s family said he has been completely abandoned by Global Security, the security firm where he has been working for about 10 months now. In fact, Essiens salary has not been paid, relatives told MMI.

As it is the norm with security companies, they contracted him alongside others and then assigned him to work at Express Exchange, where he did night guard.

He was stabbed about 8pm on May 10 while trying to do his job.

“He has been working at the company for almost 10 months. So this incident happened on the 10th of May 2023. And even after we went to the hospital, no one from the security company visited us. The manager of the bank which he was guarding came here just once,” Essien’s mother told MMI.

Aside from neglecting Essien at a critical time of need, Global Security did yet to pay his salary for April, his mother said.

“His salary for last month has not been paid and this month has not been paid. It’s not easy. Medication… we have been unable to afford anything. It’s not easy on our side. My son’s life is at risk.”

Also, Express Exchange has shown very little concern towards him, although he almost died securing the company.

“It’s just one of the bosses of the company that has been doing his best, but the bills are still there. It’s not really easy with us,” Essien’s relative said.

Essien has been surviving thanks to a good Samaritan whom he had also been working for, his mother said.

But the financial needs for medication have been unending and the money source has also run dry.

“The bank has given us no franc. My son was also working as security officer for a wine shop during the day and at Express Exchange during the night. It’s even the owner of the wine shop, where he was working during the day, who has assisted us. But he too is tired. So the situation is terrible. We are in the house. We couldn’t continue in the hospital,” she said.

Meanwhile, the armed robber who stabbed Essien had long died.

He was lynched by the population of Buea, beaten and burnt to death with petrol before the police could intervene.

Now, Essien’s family says they need at least 600.000 thousand francs for him to get back on his feet. His family has given MMI the go-ahead to collect the funds on their behalf. If you are willing to assist, here are the Momo details????
