Buea inmates boycott court session

Over 100 detainees at the Buea Central prison who were due to appear at the military tribunal today Tuesday have refused going to court.

A lawyer whose 15 clients were expected in court today told Mimi Mefo Info that the judge and other court officials are present but the inmates are no where to be found.

“They refused to leave prison this morning to court. They have raised similar concerns like their brothers in Yaounde,” the lawyer said without giving details.

The prisoners who were arrested within the context of the ongoing Anglophone crisis are decrying what they have described as “segregation and injustice”.

On the night of Monday July 22, 2019, it would be recalled hundreds of detainees at the Yaounde central prison in the Kondengui neigborhood staged a protest on the esplanade of the facility calling for the release of all Anglophone detainees.

The protest move was joined by detained supporters of opposition political party, the Cameroon Renaissance Movement, MRC party and scores of others.

During the riot which later turned bloody, the irate detainees are reported to have told the prison boss to take their grievances to the Minister of justice.

The protest which began peacefully turned violent.
Several structures were destroyed including the computer room where prison data are kept and the the main library.

As at press time, state authorities were yet to react to the situation. We have however , independently gathered that some senior government officials have visited the detention facility for an on-the-ground assessment of the skirmish.
