A man and a woman died under very unfortunate circumstances on Good Friday night following a car accident that occurred at Great Soppo, Buea.
The accident involved a collision between a Toyota Yaris and a Mercedes vehicle. While the drivers of both vehicles reportedly survived, the driver of the Mercedes fled the scene as onlookers attempted to rescue the victims.
Rescue efforts to save three victims trapped inside the Toyota Yaris resulted in two deaths.
Buea-based journalist Joseph Weno reported from the accident scene that a man and woman burned to death after a filing machine ignited a fire while forcing open the car doors.
“In the process of trying to file and cut the part of the vehicle to bring out the other victims, that is how it ignited a flame because the tank of the vehicle had burst out. It was these flames that burnt the other victims inside the vehicle,” he said.
The crash occurred around 11:30 pm. Onlookers who arrived at the scene were unable to determine the cause of the accident.
They found three unconscious people—a woman and two men—inside the Yaris, and one man in the Mercedes. However, the Mercedes driver fled before authorities arrived.
The accident happened at a time when Cameroon had reported several other crashes in the previous week, all of which claimed several lives.
On Saturday morning, gendarme officers arrived at the scene in an effort to investigate and determine the cause of the accident.
