Burglars broke into St. Charles Lwanga Catholic Church in Molyko, Buea, overnight from Sunday to Monday, leaving behind damaged property but taking nothing of value. The intruders targeted the sacristy, but their search for cash proved futile.

Parish Priest Fr. Marcel Ewane confirmed the incident, revealing that the burglars shattered the sacristy’s louvres to gain entry. “They came in search of money, likely assuming the recent harvest Thanksgiving activities had left cash on-site. Fortunately, we always secure all funds with the appropriate authorities immediately after receiving them. Finding nothing, they vented their frustration by destroying valuables,” Fr. Marcel stated.

The incident has heightened security concerns among the congregation. Parishioners are now calling for urgent measures to safeguard the church from recurring breaches.

“Our church is in the heart of Buea, yet thefts keep happening, even during Sunday mass. It’s high time the Bishop stepped in to address this,” said Mm Patience, a worried parishioner.

This burglary adds to a series of thefts that have plagued the church in recent months, frustrating the faithful and prompting calls for action. While no official statement has been released, sources confirm that Bishop Michael Miabesue Bibi of the Buea Diocese has contacted Fr. Marcel to assess the situation.

The parish community of St. Charles Lwanga Catholic Church awaits further measures to strengthen security and protect the sanctity of their place of worship.
