Burkina Faso experiences second military takeover in one year

Burkina Faso has gotten a new leader after a successful coup by military officers, who announced the dissolution of the government and the closure of borders.

Colonel Paul Henri Sandaogo Damiba was ousted yesterday, September 30, 2022, after a successful coup by some soldiers. They took over the state media yesterday evening to announce their takeover.

“Armed soldiers in fatigues and masks appeared on television in Burkina Faso on Friday night to confirm the ouster of President Paul-Henri Damiba, the second coup in the troubled West African country this year,” indicated Reuters.

The new government will be led by Ibrahim Traore. In his statement last night, he stated: “Faced with the deteriorating situation, we tried several times to get Damiba to refocus the transition on the security question.”

The coup followed heavy gunshots which resounded all over the capital on the morning of September 30, 2022.

Colonel Paul Henri Sandaogo Damiba, seized power from Roch Kabore on January 24 in a similar coup d’état.
