CAF President Patrice Motsepe extended his congratulations to Morocco on being officially confirmed as a co-host of the 2030 FIFA Men’s World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal. The announcement came on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone in the tournament’s history.

A Groundbreaking Co-Hosting Agreement

Morocco will join Spain and Portugal in co-hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which will feature a unique six-nation project. The three European countries will share the responsibility for hosting 104 of the tournament’s games. Meanwhile, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay will each host one of the matches, bringing a special South American connection to the event.

Uruguay’s involvement is particularly symbolic as the country was the venue for the very first World Cup in 1930, making the 2030 World Cup a centenary celebration. This historical link adds significant cultural and emotional value to the tournament.

Africa’s Return to the World Cup Stage

The 2030 World Cup will also mark the second time the tournament will be hosted in an African country. Morocco’s role as a co-host will bring the prestigious event back to Africa, following South Africa’s historic hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. This return represents a significant moment for African football, highlighting the continent’s growing influence in the global sports arena.

Saudi Arabia to Host the 2034 FIFA World Cup

In another landmark announcement on Wednesday, FIFA confirmed Saudi Arabia as the host for the 2034 FIFA World Cup. The decision underscores the oil-rich kingdom’s massive investment in global sports, largely driven by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The announcement places Saudi Arabia in the spotlight as it seeks to cement its status as a major player on the international sports stage.

FIFA’s Historic Announcement

FIFA President Gianni Infantino called Wednesday a “historic day” as officials unveiled the hosts for the 2030 and 2034 FIFA World Cups in Zurich, Switzerland. After an Extraordinary FIFA Congress, all 211 FIFA Member Associations convened virtually to make the announcement. Furthermore, The FIFA Council and all confederations unanimously supported the decision made after a thorough bidding process that began in October 2023.

Infantino also emphasised that the decision reflects FIFA’s commitment to harmony and rotation between the confederations, ensuring a balanced hosting cycle for the tournament. The appointment of Morocco, Spain, and Portugal for the 2030 World Cup and Saudi Arabia for the 2034 World Cup marks a new chapter in FIFA’s global hosting strategy.

A Bright Future for World Cup Hosts

Finally, as the excitement builds for the 2030 World Cup, which will celebrate the rich history of the tournament, the confirmation of these host countries paves the way for a new era of international football.
