Calls multiply for gov’t to sanction policemen for harassing opposition MP

Many, including MPs, have stood up for their fellow colleague, Hon. Nourane Fotsing after she was harassed by police officers today in Bafoussam.

Following the incident that happened early Tuesday, July 20, many remain persistent that the officers involved deserve to be punished.

Reacting to the incident, Hon. Ngala Gerard said it is “unacceptable”.

“First, we must reaffirm our total and unending support to our police forces in their mission to maintain law and order, protecting people and their goods especially to the DIRECTOR GENERAL who has brought in a lot of reforms to better the police core. They do so day and night with a lot of Bravado,” the MP for Nkambe, North West region wrote.

“However,” he went on, “we must condemn these excesses of some officials who at the same time give a dirty image of our police force. The violence meted on Hon Nourane Fotsing by a police officer in Bafoussam today is inconceivable and unacceptable”.

The CPDM MP further described the incident as a case of gender-based violence which should not happen to any woman, talk less of a lawmaker.

“As a Member of Parliament, I strongly condemn such unacceptable excesses and asked that an investigation be opened to this effect to get the facts straight and possible sanctions,” he stated.

After being harassed by security officers on her way to Foumban today, Hon Nourane was received by the Governor of the West Region.

Many are now leading a call for the police officers involved to be sanctioned, not only for the act but to set an example to their peers nationwide given the rising police brutality ad harassment.
