CAMASEJ, SNJC give deadline for government to react on Wazizi’s death

6:00 PM Thursday June 4th 2020 is the deadline given to the government of President Paul Biya to answer pertinent questions on what caused the death of journalist Samuel Wazizi of Chillen Muzik and Television (CMTV) Buea.

In a joint release signed Wednesday June 3rd 2020 by Jude Viban, the National President of Cameroon Association of English Speaking Journalists (CAMASEJ) and Denis Nkwebo, President of Cameroon Journalists Trade Union (SNJC), they have created what has been termed “Collective for Justice on the death of Wazizi”.

The collective is calling on the government of Cameroon to create a commission of inquiry to shed light on the death of the journalist Wazizi who died while in detention. They want clarity on circumstances that led to his death, where the corpse has been deposited and why he was denied justice at the Buea high court in the South West Region of Cameroon.

The collective equally denounces “…revenge seeking behaviour of authorities and the army on the journalists.”

“Taking as witnesses people, national and international opinion, the collective scandalised by the silence of all institutions in Cameroon, expresses an energetic protest and call on all Journalists and communication professionals to act and condemn this act of murder which is one too many and to remain mobilised for further actions”.

To SNJC and CAMASEJ, the death of Wazizi violates the universal declaration of human rights and an integral part of the constitution in its article 3,5 and 11.

Journalists and the general public are waiting to see what actions will be taken by the leaders if the government fails to comment after 6:00 pm.
