Roman Catholic Bishops of Cameroon, during the 47th edition of the annual gathering in Maroua, voiced deep concern about the increasing impoverishment of the population.

The bishops unanimously called for “more justice, solidarity, hard work, and trust in God” to address and overcome armed conflicts in the country’s Far North and English-speaking Regions, which has highly contributed for this impoverishment.

During the conference, the Bishops also denounced the atrocities committed by the Boko Haram sect in the Far North Region, expressing profound compassion for the victims affected by the conflict.

They also revealed that the venue for the next edition of the Catholic Bishops National Episcopal Conference has been scheduled for Buea, headquarters of the South West Region.

The decision was disclosed at the conclusion of the recent conference held in Maroua.

The Bishops, along with other members of the Catholic Church, arrived at the Maroua Salak International Airport on January 6, 2024, for the religious assembly.

The welcoming ceremony was marked by a lively reception from communities, clergy, and residents.

Throughout the Episcopal Conference, various events took place, including a Pontifical Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption of Maroua on the solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord.

Mgr Bruno Ateba Edo, Bishop of Maroua-Mokolo, presided over the mass, which saw the participation of numerous faithful from the Diocese.

A solemn opening ceremony was held on January 9 at the “Woila Vision” multi-media center, graced by the presence of the Governor of the Far North Region, the Lamido of Maroua, and various administrative, civil, traditional, and religious authorities.

Expressing their gratitude at the conclusion of the conference, the Bishops thanked Mgr Bruno Ateba Edo, his presbyterate, religious communities, lay faithful, and all the populations for the warm welcome and impeccable organization that facilitated the smooth running of the seminar.

The Bishops also acknowledged the diversity and cultural richness of the Diocese of Maroua.

While the date for the next conference is yet to be disclosed, the Diocese of Buea will host the next Episcopal gathering, continuing the tradition of bringing together Catholic leaders to address pressing issues and foster spiritual growth.
