PWD football club of Bamenda, nicknamed Abakwa Boys, will be playing the Cameroon Cup finals Sunday, September 24, for the fourth time in the club’s 61 years of existence.

Its rival, Fovu of Baham, will be appearing at the finals for the fourth time, too, and unlike PWD, which has won the trophy just once, Fovu will be searching for its third victory.

PWD seeks its second consecutive win. The Bamenda-based club lifted the trophy last year for the first time, after overpowering Astres FC by 1-nil at the Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium.

Before emerging victorious last year, the club’s last participation at the Cameroon Cup was in 1979.

Tomorrow’s game, which kicks off at 3:30pm at the Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium, will officially close the 2022 football season in Cameroon. Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute will preside at the event on behalf of President Paul Biya.

Expectations are peak among supporters of both finalists, who have been making huge sacrifices to see their sides claim the victory.

On Friday, the PWD announced it had received FCFA 50 million support from elites of the Northwest Region to help them prepare for tomorrow’s finals.

PWD players have been camping and training for tomorrow’s game since June, the club announced last week. “All hands have been put on deck to ensure that PWD emerges victorious for the second time after winning the covered trophy on March 13, 2022,” the club said in a release signed by its Secretary General, Abongwa Fozo, on September 11.

Fovu FC, on the other hand, has been mobilizing its fan base in Baham, West Region, to turn out massively tomorrow at the Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium.

Elites of Baham distributed six thousand free tickets to supporters of the club this week, and the fans will be offered free rides to Yaounde tomorrow morning.

On Thursday, the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education handed both teams a package of FCFA 6 million each to prepare for the finals.
