As temperatures soar in the northern regions of Cameroon, concerns are mounting over the potential health risks faced by elderly individuals. Experts have cited mental disorders and other diseases as potential health challenges.

The impact of elevated temperatures on the well-being of the elderly cannot be overstated, prompting a closer examination of the potential consequences.

In a recent interview, Dr. Jane Smith, a renowned geriatric specialist, highlighted the vulnerability of elderly individuals to extreme heat. “The elderly are particularly susceptible to the adverse effects of high temperatures. Prolonged exposure can lead to various health issues, including mental disorders such as heat-related depression and anxiety,” she said.

Research indicates that rising temperatures can exacerbate health conditions and contribute to the onset of new ones among the elderly population.

Dr. Smith further explained that, “the physiological changes associated with ageing make older individuals less capable of regulating body temperature efficiently. This puts them at a higher risk of heat-related illnesses, including cardiovascular complications and respiratory distress.”

Local health authorities have urged residents, especially the elderly, to take precautionary measures during periods of extreme heat.

Mary Johnson, a spokesperson for the Department of Health, emphasised the importance of staying hydrated and seeking refuge in cool environments.

“It’s crucial for our elderly population to stay well-hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to high temperatures. This can significantly reduce the risk of heat-related health issues,” Johnson stated.

Community organisations are also stepping up efforts to support elderly residents during the anticipated heatwave.

The Northern Elderly Support Initiative has launched a campaign to raise awareness about the potential risks and provide assistance to those in need. Janet Thompson, the initiative’s coordinator, expressed her concerns, saying, “We’re mobilising resources to ensure that our elderly community members have access to cool spaces, water, and any necessary support to safeguard their health.”

As the region braces for the impending high temperatures, it is evident that a collaborative effort is essential to protect the well-being of the elderly. By raising awareness, providing support, and implementing preventive measures, communities can mitigate the risks associated with extreme heat and help safeguard the health of their elderly residents.
