Cameroon: Former Footballers Take Up Fight To Protect AFCON Image

Former Indomitable Lions player, Geremi Njitap has urged football organizations across the world to show respect to Africans, football fans, and the AFCON competition.

His call comes nine days to the kickoff of the TotalEnergies AFCON2021 on January 9 in Yaounde, Cameroon.

It comes at a time that many African nations are still facing difficulties to assemble their players from especially European Clubs.

The foreign football clubs have complained of allowing their players to fly to Africa, with claims of trying to avoid avoid-19 spread amongst the competing teams.

With what seems to have won the support of the world governing body’s head, Gianni Infantino for a possible cancelation or postponement, the Confederation of African Football, CAF, under the leadership of Patrice Motsepe has insisted that the tournament must hold.

Football lovers are continually expressing disgust over the behavior of Western football clubs over the claims many say are completely out of place, given that competitions in Europe are still taking place amidst the said covid-19 pandemic.

While noting that some key African players are currently the brain behind the success of many European Clubs, football lovers in Cameroon say European Clubs are ungrateful, attempting to make the players choose between their nations and clubs.

Many top-ranking world footballers have criticized the European demands for a possible cancelation or postponement of the AFCON, with Ian Wright of England being one of them.

Jubilations and final retouch are currently taking place across major cities in Cameroon as January 9 approaches.

Meanwhile, competing nations have been trooping into Cameroon as days go by, with some already embarking on training sessions.

CAF President, Patrice Motsepe on his part, is expected to make his way to Cameroon come December 7, 2022, two days ahead of the AFCON commencement date.
