Indomitable Lions’ goalkeeper, Andre Onana says he will appeal a one-year ban imposed on him by the European Football Association, UEFA.
The Association handed the three-time African best goalkeeper a twelve-month ban after he failed a drug test carried out in October.
Reacting to the ban, the sporter who has for the past four years also been named best goalkeeper in Holland said the ban was too heavy and inconsiderate.
“I mistook a medicine containing a substance banned by WADA for a simple aspirin. The medicine was prescribed to my girlfriend and I mistakenly took it for aspirin because the packaging was almost identical, which I greatly regret,” he explained.
With UEFA acknowledging that the act was an “unintentional mistake,” Onana says the ban on him is “excessive and disproportionate”.
“I will appeal the decision before the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) to prove my innocence and clear my name,” he pledged.
He added that he hopes to be back on the pitch as soon as possible, thanking his club, Ajax, and the Cameroon national team for their support.
