Weeks ago, Cameroon like many other nations was without a single case of the coronavirus.

Things have drastically changed over the past days however, with the number of cases reaching 66 according to the health Minister, Manaouda Malachie.

The country’s fight against the virus like in most countries keeps getting daunting by the day and has seemingly heightened with the constant disrespect for the measures put in place by PM Dion Ngute to contain the spread of the virus.

Talking to MMI on the basis of anonymity, a medical staff in Yaounde says “the figures the Minister has given do not match with the real figures.”

Among the many contaminated he says include health workers in facilities hosting COVID-19 patients. “The issue of the President of the National Assembly being contaminated is true,” he says, citing other government officials and some of their family members.

“Presently, I’m not exaggerating, the true figures are about 560… and it is just the start” he explains.Official government figures, however, remain at 66, with the health minister calling on the general public to ensure good hygiene and abide by the decisions taken to limit the spread of the virus.

Communication Minister, Emmanuel Sadi is expected to make a series of declarations in the moments ahead regarding government communication policy in the face of the pandemic.
