Cameroon: Opposition Political parties to unite over call for alternative electoral code

Close to 10 leaders of opposition political parties in Cameroon are due to grant a press conference at 2:00 pm Thursday April 1st 2021 in Yaounde.

They are expected to announce the putting in place of a technical secretariat to receive proposals and draft an alternative electoral code that will be tabled to the government.

According to a credible source in the group of opposition political parties “we are mainly responding to a call by elections Cameroon-ELECAM that portions of the electoral code need to be ameliorated to give all parties equal chances during elections. It’s a common problem for all political parties since 1992 and therefore coming together to solve it is a good thing “.

The political parties coming together to ameliorate the electoral code according to our source are the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (CRM) of Prof. Maurice Kamto, Social Democratic Front( SDF) of Ni John Fru Ndi, UFDP of Prince Ekoso, the CDU party of Patricia Ndam Njoya Progressive Movement (PM) of Hillaire Zipang, PCRN of Cabral Libii and Union de Movements Socialistes (UMS) of Pierre Kwemo. There are prospects that other political parties and civil society groups will join.

Among other things these opposition parties want to see in the alternative electoral code is a single ballot voting system, two round election, administration should stay off electoral issues, biometric voting system to reduce fraud, procedure of election litigation should take place before the proclamation of results.

Political parties coming together say the fight has nothing to do with presenting a single presidential candidate during the 2025 presidential election.”we want the electoral code fixed and leaders of political parties will participate in elections freely.

“The technical secretariat after collecting proposals will draft the alternative electoral code and a proposed amendment for the revision of an electoral code. These shall be submitted to the conference of political party leaders before a joint declaration on the final document shall be made public then submitted to the government. “
