Cameroon: Police Wives Association donates didactic materials to children of fallen colleagues ahead of back-to-school

Over 925 children of fallen police officers in the Centre Region of Cameroon have received didactic materials in the build-up to the resumption of the 2023–2025 academic year.

This follows a donation made by the Police Wives Association, POWA, a grouping of spouses of serving police officers in the country, The Guardian Post daily newspaper has reported

The items, which included bags, books, pencils, rulers, realm papers, and others, were handed to the beneficiaries on Tuesday, August 29, 2023, in a ceremony at the esplanade of the National Advanced Police College in Yaounde.

When presenting the educational materials to the recipients, Baya Marguerite, National Coordinator of POWA, speaking on behalf of the association’s President Philomena Mbarga, the wife of the delegate general for national security, stated: “The association’s annual exercise seeks to assist school-going children of fallen police officers.”

Thanking the General Delegation of National Security and the Ministry of Social Affairs for their constant support of POWA, she said, “A similar donation exercise will be carried out in the other regions of the country, during which some 2,500 pupils and students from the nine other regions will benefit from similar gifts in the days ahead.”

Speaking at the occasion, the representative of the Minister of Social Affairs, Berry Itoe, said the gesture is a path towards the amelioration of the living conditions of children who have lost one of their parents in the course of fighting to defend the country’s territorial integrity.

“It is important to assist these children to have access to quality education,” Itoe stressed, pledging government support.

Beneficiaries, on their part, expressed words of appreciation to POWA for always thinking about them.

“I want to thank POWA for assisting us each year For an effective school year. I have received school materials that will help me start the year with ease, ” said Genny Enyegue, a Form Three student and one of the beneficiaries.
