Cameroon’s government has announced a prohibition on importing recreational vehicles older than 5 years old. The prohibition, which goes into force on August 1, 2023, is part of a bigger initiative by the government to safeguard the automobile industry in the country.

The ban includes all automobiles, SUVs, and vans used on a sporadic basis. Heavy-duty trucks older than ten years will be included as well. The Cameroon government has justified the restriction by citing the need to prevent the entry of old automobiles that are unsafe to drive or do not adhere to the country’s environmental regulations.

Devastating Impact

The restriction will undoubtedly affect the car industry in Cameroon. The embargo is meant to curb the number of old automobiles entering the nation, which is currently high. The cost of used vehicles in Cameroon can increase as a result of this.

The government of Cameroon is trying to encourage the development of the country’s automotive industry and decrease the number of traffic accidents caused by occasionally broken-down vehicles, hence the ban on the importation of occasional vehicles.

There may be pushback from businesses that benefit from the importation of second-hand vehicles. However, the government has stated that the prohibition is not only to safeguard the automobile industry but also to guarantee the availability of safe and dependable vehicles for citizens.

Do you agree that Cameroon’s government was correct in deciding to forbid the importation of recreational vehicles? Share your thoughts!
